The Young and the Restless

Normally you have to be around Tropicana Field a while to cop an attitude like Delmon Young’s.
He may be a baseball babe, but that didn’t stop Delmon, the Devil Rays first-team malcontent, from saying what most players think but are afraid to speak out loud. He hasn’t even been here yet, and already he wants out.
I say, tough. Too bad, rookie.
We’ve had to endure all these years of Rays baseball, and - darn it Delmon - you’re no better than the rest of us. You’ve got to endure it too. Take it like a man and quit whining.
In case you missed it, Delmon delivered a stunning blow to the Rays late Monday afternoon. The club set up a conference call with reporters so he could chat nice about being named the Baseball America minor league player of the year. They needed a conference call because Young isn’t on the major-league roster. Eric Munson made the list of players called up from Durham for the last month of the season. So did Joe Beimel, and even Dewon Brazelton.
But no Delmon or B.J. Upton.
The Rays, of course, don’t want to start the clock on Young’s service time in the majors. The quicker he gets here, the quicker the six years can pass before he goes free agent. So, despite the fact he is unquestionably ready now to play in the big leagues, he sits in Durham - and he doesn’t like it. He blasted the Rays on that conference call and said, among other things, that he just wants to get his six years in here so he can leave.
This is a problem, but it’s not unexpected. He a great talent, and he undoubtedly be a productive player.
But do you want a guy around who is griping about wanting to leave your “cheap” (his words) organization before he even gets here? Especially a guy who took $5.8 million from you and now labels you cheap.
In the Rays case, it’s a simple answer: Yes.
Shrug it off to immaturity.
He should have been up here by now, and if he had been this P.R. disaster might have been averted.
Instead, we’re left with the future face of the franchise mouthing off and wishing the future would hurry up so he can leave this franchise behind.
It could have been worse, though. At least he didn’t wander into Vince Naimoli’s restroom.

"He acts like he’s the only one to have a good year in the minors and not get a call.”

Let’s agree on this, shall we?  Delmon’s the only Baseball America 2005 Minor Leaguer of the Year to not get a call.

Read those stats again.  “A good year in the minors” my keester

This is ridiculous with the Delmon Young situation. From the Alex Sanchez suspension to Dewon Brazelton walking out to minor leaguer ripping on the team; this organization is joke. Let Upton, Hammel, and Young play instead of bringing up stiffs like Carter, Biemel, Munson, and total bust Brazelton. This shows how patheic this team is. Keep Piniella he is not the problem. The first person that needs to go is Vince Naimoli along with Chuck LaMar. Chuck and Vince are baseball illiterate when it comes down to putting the best product out there.

I agree with Joe.  Delmon needs to act like a man on this one.  He acts like he’s the only one to have a good year in the minors and not get a call.  The Rays have a legitimate reason for not calling him up, especially when they are 25 or so games out of first.  Why start his arb clock for no good reason.  The kid is 19 and will have his day hopefully when the Rays are closer to being competitive.

Delmon makes a valid point, the Rays are simply being cheap. However, Delmon may be getting ahead of himself when he says he will leave after 6 years and that his relationship with the Rays may be forever ruined. The fact is, money talks and everything else walks. If Delmon and the Rays can put together a winning team in the next few years and people begin to show up at the Trop (they will), the team will be able to afford to keep Delmon for as long as they want. Playing for a winning team and being rewarded with a fat contract can wash away all of the anger he feels now.
By the end of six years, the Rays may show Delmon the money, or the Rays may be ready to show him the door.

This is a joke. This is exactly why the Double-A-Rays will always be at the bottom, and why the Florida Marlins will always be in contention year in and year out.

All professional sports in this town are a joke. Take it to South Beach, yo.

"Take it like a man and quit whining”? Well you have a point there boss.  What possible use could the Rays have for a bat like Young’s?  I just don’t think we could fit him in this year.

Dude: you mock yourself.  Instead of hiding our best guys, let me make the modest counterproposal that—hang, on this will astound you—WE PLAY THEM INSTEAD.

The fans have no leverage whatsoever over Naimoli.  Evidently he could give a rip if 3 people show up to watch his “premier” designated games.  Because Big Vince is utterly without shame, eloquent silvertongued sportswriters also have no leverage.  Young doesn’t have much leverage either, but he can sure get Naimoli’s and our attention.

Give that man a microphone!
